    American Prometheus

Kai Bird is a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist and historian who directs the Leon Levy Center for Biography at the City University of New York. Martin J. Sherwin (1937–2021) was a historian of the nuclear age who taught at Tufts and George Mason and spent about twenty-five years researching this book before inviting Bird to help finish it.

In American Prometheus, Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin tell the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist who led the making of the atomic bomb and was later stripped of his security clearance by his own government. The book won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Biography and inspired the 2023 film Oppenheimer. You’ll learn how a fragile prodigy became a great teacher and leader, why success brought him a lasting moral burden, and how dissent in the early Cold War could cost a patriot everything.
