What you'll learn

Carol S. Dweck is the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology at Stanford University and a member of the National Academy of Sciences, known worldwide for her research on motivation and achievement.

In Mindset, Carol Dweck argues that our beliefs about our own abilities shape how we learn, work, love and recover from setbacks. You’ll learn the difference between a fixed and a growth mindset, why praise for being smart can backfire, how champions and leaders handle failure, and how to begin changing your own mindset.

A note on context: some large reviews, notably a 2018 meta-analysis by Sisk and colleagues, found the effects of mindset interventions on grades to be small on average. Dweck and her collaborators respond that the effects are real but vary, and are largest for struggling students.
