David Epstein

David Epstein is an investigative reporter at ProPublica and the author of the 2019 book Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized Worldand the New York Times bestselling book The Sports Gene: Inside the Science of Extraordinary Athletic Performance, published by Penguin in August 2013.

He used to be a senior writer at Sports Illustrated. He specializes in science issues in sports and investigative reporting. With his colleague Selena Roberts, Epstein broke the story that the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez tested positive for steroids in 2003.
